It was great to meet all the new Illustration for Screen Art and Graphic Design for Digital Media degree students at the University of Brighton's Hastings Campus on Monday!
I took a selection of lovely zines from the Zineopolis Art-Zine collection and gave a lecture about the collection and how we define an 'Art-Zine'.
In the afternoon I ran a workshop with Paul Burgess (their Course Leader) and we explored the idea of 'GOOD and BAD' through a folded-sheet zine workshop. Here are some images of the day.

Description:
"This work came out of a dream and then another dream and the peripheral flutterings of the mind vying for attention. It was dream that showed me what to do and that was to follow where it might lead. There seemed a purpose, a vague goal, but it showed me there was no grander purpose than to spend time quietly alone by myself. By delivering that story onto paper intuitively, I have documented the process of listening to myself - the dream self. The stories appear in comic book form as a souvenir of those trips taken to this quiet place. I recreate that place here in a tangible form, a physical approximation so that you too may visit awhile. I recommend visiting this space alone but that may not be possible." Lewanne Stewart from Authorial Illustration Practice Website

Ich Bin Ein Berliner
Matthew George
UK 2015
Saddle stitched zine in colour on white copy paper
Mini-zine 5cm x 7cm with 32 pages
Description:
"Introducing Ich bin ein Berliner! A radical new zine on various themes including all things German, American popular culture, donuts and political graphic art from around the world. This 32 page mini zine hopes to embrace all things German much as the U.S President John F. Kennedy aimed to do in his 1963 speech "Ich bin ein Berliner", which roughly translates as I am a jelly doughnut. The zine will feature in a visually graphic way, some of the rich culture and feel of Germany which charms so many and at the same time offering a witty perspective. This is the first issue of of an ongoing zine which I hope you will all enjoy. It is completely hand made and printed by myself and hope to be able to distribute them across the UK and ROTW."

Saddle stitched zine in black and white on satin heavy paper.
A5 with 80 pages
Description:
"I started out by using objects and images from the 'Wellcome Trust' in London as a trigger for making
a series of stream-of-consciousness drawings. And then from those drawings I looked to see if I could find something to develop into some sort of narrative. This is what I ended up with."
This black and white zine is an unusual telling of the 'Nativity', drawn throughout the pace is frantic
as the narrative evolves. Matt is an Alumni of the Portsmouth illustration degree and completed his
Master's at the RCA in 2013.

Folded offset-print poster (84 × 59.4 cm) on heavy paper.
Description, taken from the Married Print website:
In her essay Infrared Dreams in Times of Transparency – The Love Life of Drones and Other Western Cyborgs Vika Kirchenbauer investigates the concepts of transparency, love, the “western” gaze etc. by reference to the global drone system:
"Drones are masturbatory: they resemble only a self-consuming illusion of total subjectivity, a lonesome wank in the safest place. The drone is the ultimate peeping tom of modern warfare. Looking at the world through drones, with no-one looking back, the West –Former West, Global North or whatever term is considered adequate– ultimately stares back at itself. The gaze unmet by the observed is lastly directed inwards with self-satisfactory fulfilment."Amrei Hofstätter translates some of these ideas into one of her signature illustrations, depicting transformations of unclear result that leave behind traces of abstract, absurdist machines on the brink of disintegration.
MARRIED PRINT gives space to arguments about contemporary culture, society and politics.
For each issue, an author is invited to explicitly deploy a theme of her choice, and an illustrator
to comment and reflect on it visually in poster format.
The dense and detailed texts and images span a wide range of themes and styles, but as common thread we ask our contributors for overtwisted speculations or bold thematic cross-fadings and we trust in their indifference towards affirmative accomodations.
MARRIED PRINT comes as folded offset-print poster (84 × 59,4 cm) on heavy paper.
Additionally, the illustration is available as a fine art print in a limited edition of 10.
MARRIED PRINT is edited by Martin Müller and Inga Seidler and published by Dicey Studios

How to Get Shit Done

DR Charlotte Cooper
Publishing Info:
London 2013
A5 saddle-stitched zine.
16 pages on off-white paper with slightly heavier cover.
(No images in this zine).
Description:
This zine is unusual in our collection since it only includes text. However, it's about getting things done, getting creative projects off the ground and how to avoid delaying and 'faffing' around. The zine is full of expletives used to emphasise action. The tone is humorous and there's some great advice about how to actually get work completed.
Excerpt from Charlotte's blog...
This is a zine for people who struggle to get shit done. It’s for the avoiders and procrastinators, the non-finishers, the inert, the moribund, and the people who dwell on fear and anxiety. By shit I mean DIY cultural work, but it can also mean the day-to-day stuff of life. I made this zine because I’ve been hearing a lot of conversations by people who struggle to get shit done. I am quite good at getting shit done, so I thought I’d share a little of what I know. The zine has 16 pages and a card cover. It’s written in a snappy, no-nonsense tone and features a fair bit of swearing. It’s a queer-punk self-help zine that critiques self-help culture and includes a broader political context. It contains the following:
Some things I’ve done recently
- A discussion about what motivates people to do things and the difficulties of courting success
- A consideration of the resources people may or may not have to do things
- Three common obstacles to getting shit done (fear, time, discipline)
- Helpful resources
- A passage about the implications of archiving
