Description:
Small zine that uses humour and narrative in the form of a daily diary that shows the interactions of the narrator with their ‘helpful’ computer. The computer known as ‘Compu-Pal’ is trying to be useful but inadvertently stresses the user by overriding their decisions, thus infantilising the author. Interestingly this zine uses hand drawn versions of operating system windows, loading bars and alerts, making us aware of the human behind the story. The typography parodies ‘Chicago’, Susan Kare’s font designed for Apple, in use from 1984, the square shapes displayed on an early screen are a ubiquitous visual code for ‘computer’.

In Ronning’s zine the computer helpfully creates art to free up the narrator’s time and there’s a parody of a fitness watch that tells the user to “Please relax! Enjoy your leisure time!” amidst a flurry of pop-up windows alerting the user to data collection and privacy risks. The humour comes from the absurdity of the computer ‘helper’ which ironically doesn’t help at all.

The pack contains 32 cards, each measuring the size of a business card. The cards are made of laminated paper with photographic collages of South East London landscapes. The fragments are abstract and photocopied to create a unique aesthetic. The transparent plastic container is also the size of a business card, making it easy to carry around.
The South East London Photographic Collage Cards can be used as a creative tool for inspiration, brainstorming, or as a game. The cards can be shuffled and rearranged to create new landscapes, providing endless possibilities for artistic expression.

Ceri Amphlett delivered the workshop and images were drawn/collages in black and white then laser printed in red/blue on white and yellow paper. The subject matter was the choice of the illustrators. Completed in a couple of hours.

Arts Collective Stair/Slide/Space facilitated the exhibition and associated workshops and events. Conversation Station is an evolving artwork that proposes a new kind of public consultation. The zine asks various questions such as; Do galleries make us feel uncomfortable? Should art say something about the world around us?
