Future Fantasteek! #22: Paper Cuts

Future Fantasteek! #22: Paper Cuts
Jac Batey, Brighton, UK (2023)

Publishing Info:
Broadsheet newspaper format
Eight pages

Description:
A visualisation how new terminology, and aphorisms can affect mental health. Illustrated through a combination of collage and drawing and printed in the form of a broadsheet newspaper, seeking to bring attention to the passive/aggressive phrases and words that are often used to bully and blame individuals. 'Forgetting your password' is a shared experience, where we are made to feel inadequate by the bossy authoritarian tone of the dialogue window. The artwork places us at the centre getting a ‘telling-off’ and nose-tweak from the irritated operating system.

The original illustrations from FF#22 were additionally selected for exhibition by Creative People Hounslow as part of their touring exhibition around London Libraries (2023-2025), How Are You (Really)? The exhibition sought to create a space for conversations about mental health and well-being in contemporary culture.

At some point you might have thought someone would find something better to do...but apparently not. Well, the walls of money have stuck to rich people again and University is now soooo expensive only the Queen can afford to send her eldest son, don’t even bother sending girls - they just need to be pretty these days, start saving up for a boob job and sod the degree... (unless it’s in cosmetic surgery) Damp Research - thinking for you, because you’re watching X-Factor...”

Description:
A collection of illustration, hand lettering and photography with witty inventions, advice and satirical advertisements. A daily visual diary of what's happening within view of the author, social commentry through drawing.
Quote from author’s website: “What’s happened recently then?.... 'The Damp Research Team' have studiously tackled the issues that we all think about - such as do you waste more time on Facebook or Twitter, and what’s the point of it all when your closest friends are only ‘virtual’ and can’t even buy you a beer and crisps? In the current economic climate all the Damp Staff have been promptly sacked and the company has been sold to 'foreigners'. They’ve hired some child labour to do the work at a fraction of the price, which means it’s much better this time around since the kids are better at drawing. We’ve kept all our middle-managers though, since they are better at designing nice colourful forms in Excel. So, it seems the world is REALLY going-down-the-pan as we speak, but at least your hair will look pretty and the Botox will smooth over your anxious brow as you glance with alarm into oblivion. Time for a cuppa-T love?”

The evil central colour pull-out has a mirror where you can see your evil twin or simply worry more with the new Damp Worry Doll. There are inventions to help you spot a bad idea; pretend to talk like a grown-up or slow yourself down to avoid having to do anything. That and so much more... PLUS are you really being watched?”

Ever wondered why everything is always out of order? Let the Entropy-Go-Round inform you. How useful is Vitamin O? And another 'bang-on' Masked-Cat truism for your delectation..”

Future Fantasteek! (ISSN 2399-3022) brings together a trichotomy of investigation; art-zines and independent publishing; artist as social commentator and drawing as a means of immediate visual communication. The series explores obdurate boundaries between journalism and authorial illustration using satire to reflect notions of ‘Britishness’. The series can be read as a sequence, from just prior to the ‘credit crunch’ through to the ‘age of austerity’. The series is independently published as a limited edition art-zine, with two issues per year.

The Future: A One Day Zine

The Future: A One Day Zine
Luke Johnson aka. Lulu Johnson

Publishing Info:
A6 black and white photocopier
Side-stapled, Portsmouth, UK, 2023

Description:
Black and white pages of created collages from craft paper, magazines and maps. Drawing in graphic pen, paint and ink.
"I made The Future for our group Social Awareness project as an experimental Zine so that I could test out some materials, typography, and page layouts. I made The Future from start to finish in one day as I wanted to challenge myself to see what I was capable of making in a short time frame. It's early in the project so our group doesn't have a Social Awareness theme yet, so I went for a loose theme of the future as by using creative outputs to tackle social awareness issues, we are inevitability trying to change the future for the better. I brought the zine to our tutorial and gave each of the group a copy for their sketchbooks, hopefully it will help us create a successful collaborative zine for this project."
